Hey guys! I’m back with another great DIY project! I got this awesome idea from the fabulous sisters at Shanty 2 Chic, if you guys don’t know who they are-you are missing out, BIG TIME! They have so many great DIY projects for all levels of DIY’ers, those two were the ones that inspired me to do my own DIY’ing and to stop relying on the hubby! I have provided a link below for their plans, my plans are for the iPad mini’s, and these were meant to lay sideways because this is how my kiddos like to watch their iPads! For Shanty 2 Chic’s plans, click here: http://www.shanty-2-chic.com/2013/03/ipad-display-diy.html
Supplies Needed:
1x8x12 (can buy in a 8ft board)
1x2x12 (can buy in a 8ft board)
Wood Glue
Hammer
Finish Nails
Stain
Brush
Paper Towels or Clean Rag
Chalk Labels
Chalk Markers
Cut List:
1×8 @ 10″
1×2 @ 10″ (2)
For the cuts I am only showing measurements to make one iPad stand, but in the pictures below, you will see double!
First, I started with a 1x8x12 and cut it into one 10″ piece, if you guys don’t have a saw the guys at Home Depot or Lowes will Cut it for you. Then cut the 1x2x12 into two 10″ pieces.
Next, stain all of your cut pieces, I chose Varathane in Briar Smoke and let that sit for about 5 minutes before rubbing it off. Remember, staining is not like painting, you have to wipe stain off, if you leave it on you will get a very sticky residue and the longer you leave stain on for, the darker it gets.
After the stain dries line one of the 1×2 with wood glue and adhere to another 1×2. One of the 1×2 will be standing and the other will be laying flat, I hope that helps! Sorry I forgot to take a picture showing you guys what I mean!? If you scroll to the second picture below, you will see what I mean and hopefully that clarifies the confusion!
After you have the two 1×2’s glued together, line the 1×8 with wood glue and line it up to the 1×2’s and let it sit before nailing it together, I like to do this because wood glue expands as it dries and this gives me the time to clean up the excess glue! Also, it’s easier to nail when the glue has dried a little bit so the pieces aren’t moving around on you!
To clean the glue just use a toothpick and wet paper towel.
Next, add 2 nails to the front and 3 nails to the back, you. You can see it in the picture below.
After all the nails are in place, add the chalkboard labels to the front piece of the 1×2, I found these chalkboard labels from Target’s Dollar Spot but you can find similar ones here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01KUGVR14/ref=mp_s_a_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1486765046&sr=8-17&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=chalkboard+labels&dpPl=1&dpID=41GpPCgONaL&ref=plSrch.
After I put the chalkboard labels on I used chalk markers to write my kids names on them, so there would be no fighting over who’s stand was who’s! These are the chalk markers I used: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0199K6I16/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1486765323&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=color+wand+chalk+markers&dpPl=1&dpID=51I6a%2BWm1qL&ref=plSrch
I really like these markers because they wipe off! I have tried so many chalk markers and they don’t wipe off, so this is a big plus in my book!?
You can definitely have this ready in under an hour but I did leave this overnight because of the stain, even though I wiped off the stain I knew my kids would be using this everywhere, so I like to take that extra precaution and not have stain all over my furniture! Here is the finished project!
I would love to see what you guys come up with!
As usual, if you guys have any questions or comments please feel free to email me or comment in the box below and I will get back to you as soon as possible! Happy DIY’ing!
