DIY Key Rack

Hey guys!  I’m back with another quick and easy DIY project!  The only tool needed for this is a drill, saws are optional!

I needed to be able to hang up keys and I was trying to figure it out for the longest time where to hang this because I wanted cup hooks to be able to hold the  keys and I was too scared to hang it up on the wall with the kids, they are constantly running all over and pushing chairs against anything so they can climb up and touch whatever they want to touch! So, one day I realized I could make a short key rack and mount it on the inside of the kitchen cabinets.  If you need a bigger key rack and you don’t have kiddos acting like kids definitely make it bigger!

This cost me about $5 to make because I already had most of the supplies on hand, if you don’t have everything you need expect to pay about $20 without the cost of a drill and Miter Saw.  I know it sounds like a lot for something so small but you will have extra supplies and I will have a lot more DIY projects coming along so it will be worth it!

If you are on the fence about buying a Miter Saw I recommend buying the Ryobi, that’s what I use and they are definitely by far the most inexpensive, also if you are not sure what kind of saw to buy as a first tool, I would definitely recommend buying a Miter Saw first – you will get the most bang for your buck on this purchase!

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

(1) 1×2 @ 8 ft long

Miter Saw

Stain

Label Holders

Cup Hooks

Scrapbook Paper

Black Marker

Drill

Command Strips or Double Sided Mounting Tape

CUT LIST:

1×2 @ 10 inches long

STEP 1:

Cut your 1×2 at 10 inches long, if you don’t have a saw the guys at Home Depot and Lowes will cut it for you.

STEP 2:

Stain your wood, I used Varathane in Briarsmoke. Let that sit for 5 minutes before rubbing it off.

STEP 3:

Lay out your label holders how you want them on the wood, I didn’t measure it, I just eyeballed it!?  I used label holders from Hobby Lobby, I found them awhile back on a 50% off sale but you can find the label tags here: http://www.hobbylobby.com/Crafts-Hobbies/Wood-Crafting/Hardware-Tools/Antique-Bronze-Plated-Metal-Label-Holders/p/80645135

Once you know where you want to put them mark your holes for the screws and pre drill your holes, it’ll be much easier for you to get the screws in.

STEP 4:

Now all the label holders are attached, turn the wood onto its side so you can add the cup hooks, I found the cup hooks in Target, they were in the aisle with the paint.  Again, I didn’t measure where I wanted the hooks – I just eyeballed it!  I pushed the hooks in a little bit so I could make a little hole and then made the hole deeper with a drill, you are definitely going to need a drill here unless you want to keep screwing those hooks in, believe me it was a little hard even after pre drilling!

STEP 5:

Once you have all your cup hooks added, it should look this:

Now take some scrap scrapbook paper and measure for the labels, yes this part I measured because I didn’t want to sit there all day trimming down little pieces of paper!  After all your paper is cut use a black marker and write your numbers.

STEP 6:

Add your command strips to the back of the key rack.  If you’re like me and realized when you wanted to hang it up that you ran out of command strips then is where you need double sided mounting tape!  I was so relieved when I found it so I didn’t have to run to the store for one thing!  I only added hot glue to the back side of the wood not to the cabinet.  The reason I did that is because I knew the keys were going to be heavy and I wanted it to hold.
