DIY Essential Oil Perfume
Hey guys, I’m back with another quick and easy essential oil recipe idea! This DIY Essential Oil Perfume can be made in 2 minutes! All you need is 3 essential oils, witch hazel and some distilled water. The great thing about making your own perfume is you can control and adjust your scent to your liking, it’s a lot cheaper than buying a store bought perfume and no one else will be wearing the same scent! It may seem a little expensive to get started with buying essential oils, but you get about 250 drops to a 15mL bottle, so it’s well worth it and there are so many different things you can do with oils.

At first it may seem a little intimidating to start but it is so easy to adjust the scent. You need to have a top note, middle note and a base note when making your own perfume. I would not start getting crazy and adding a different bunch of oils for the sake of it! My recipe below includes the top note, middle note and a base note. As you start to get more comfortable with mixing scents, then you can get a little crazy! Why do you need all these different notes? Here is exactly why!
Top notes are the first aroma you smell, it’s going to be something you like or something you don’t like. Their scents are fresh and sharp, but their scents don’t last long and will give way to the middle notes. You will start to smell the middle notes once the top notes fades away, middle notes are usually more full bodied aromas and are the more dominant scent in a perfume. Middle note scents do last longer than top notes, but base notes last the longest with scents. Even though the top and middle notes require more drops of essential oils, the base note is the underlying aroma that you will continue to smell even after both the other notes have dissipated. Base notes tend to be deep and rich in fragrance. Here is an example of different blends you can mix.
Top notes make up about 30% of the blend.
Anise Lavender
Basil Lemon
Bergamont Lemongrass
Citronella Orange
Eucalyptus Peppermint
Grapefruit Tangerine
Middle notes make up about 50% of the blend.
Chamomile Nutmeg
Cinnamon Parsley
Clary Sage Pepper
Clove Pine
Cypress Rose
Dill Rosemary
Fennel Spruce
Fir Tea Tree
Jasmine Thyme
Juniper Berry Yarrow
Marjoram Ylang Ylang
Neroli
Base notes make up about 20% of the blend.
Angelca Root Myrrh
Balsam Patchouli
Cedarwood Sandalwood
Frankincense Vanilla
Ginger Vetiver
Helichrysum
I have all the links provided below to the exact products I used.
8 Drops Ylang Ylang Essential Oil
15 Drops Orange Essential Oil
17 Drops Lavender Essential Oil
2 Tablespoons Witch Hazel
Distilled Water
Perfume Atomizer
STEP 1:
Combine lavender essential oil, ylang ylang essential oil, and orange essential oil into perfume atomizer, put the cap on and shake very well. Take the cap off and add the witch hazel, and shake very well again. The only link I provided was for the lavender because I bought the orange and ylang ylang from a local vendor (Artisan-Oils) in Bethelem, PA. You can find similar orange essential oil here: Amazon.com ,and you can find ylang ylang essential oil here: Amazon.com
STEP 2:
Once everything is mixed well, give it at least 72 hours before adding the distilled water. The longer you wait, the better it is. I waited a week before adding the water, it’ll give the oils the chance to mix better! I didn’t give a measurement for the water because you want to fill up the rest of your perfume atomizer with water. It should be roughly 2 tablespoons, the atomizer looks small only because the gold cap covers a lot of the glass!
Now you have a custom homemade perfume that doesn’t cost a lot and also makes for a great gift!
