I am using homemade dried orange peels in this recipe. It’s very easy to make if you can’t find it in your local grocery store. Here are the instructions for making your own.
Wash and dry oranges.
Use a vegetable peeler to trim away just the colored part of the skin, leaving the pith behind. The white pith is not only bitter, but the peels will also take much longer to dry if it is still attached. Use a knife to scrape off any pith that sticks to the peels.
Set your oven to 250 and lay orange peels on parchment paper lined baking sheet.
Once they start to curl and harden, they’re done. This should take about 20-30 minutes. Once they are cooled down, you can grind up in a coffee grinder or food processor.
Instructions
- Place cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, allspice berries, cloves and star anise in large zip top bag.
- Crush with rolling pin a few times to break larger spices and release the oils.
- Add dried orange peel and mix well. Store until ready to use.
These spices will last for 6 months stored in an air tight container.
Add two tablespoons of mulling spices for each quart of apple cider. Bring to a boil and then simmer for 30 minutes.
You can also add this to tea, lemonade, or cranberry juice. This would taste great in my Cranberry Cider.
The longer it sits, the more flavorful it will be.
